Police searching for missing Maryland girl, father charged with murder and abduction

Police are searching for a Maryland girl and her father after the girl's mother was found dead on Thursday. The search has been broadened to nationwide.

The search began after the mother, Bobbie Cortez, was discovered in her home dead with multiple stab wounds, reports UPI. The father, Timothy Virts and daughter Caitlyn Virts haven't been seen since.

Police have charged the father with first-degree murder and the abduction of his daughter. A police statement said, "Police are concerned for the safety of Caitlyn Marie Virts since she is not supposed to be with her father."

According to The Associated Press, police believe that it is possible that Virts has left the state and took his daughter with him. The Amber Alert has been stretched to include West Virginia, though police say they don't know if he actually headed that way.

Caitlyn Virts was living with Cortez along with her twin sister and a brother, and they are both accounted for. Two other adults also live at the house. Though the police statement notes Virts isn't supposed to be with his daughter, he allegedly also had been living at the house for a short while.
