Sports Illustrated makes push for Pete Rose, Dowd remains firm

Twenty-five years after Pete Rose was banished from baseball, the debate of whether or not the lifetime ban should still be in place rages on.

While many have lobbied for the ban to be lifted, lawyer, John M. Dowd, who investigated the case, remains firm that Rose should not be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame or allowed to coach or otherwise work in pro baseball, according to the Washington Post.

The ‘should he’ or ‘shouldn’t he’ talk has started again since the all-time hits leader is on this week’s Sports Illustrated cover. In the magazine, an excerpt from the upcoming biography, “Pete Rose: An American Dilemma,” authored by Kostya Kennedy, is featured.

Dowd’s investigation in 1989 found that the Cincinnati Reds manager bet on baseball while he was playing and managing the game. The findings led to his expulsion from and consideration for the Hall of Fame.

The debate is brought up every so often as proponents believe Rose has done his time and question if his betting on baseball was any worse than what the admitted steroid users did. Meanwhile, opponents believe what he did was a disgrace and that he knew the rules and was supposed to oblige by them.

The 72-year-old’s record of 4,256 career hits still has yet to be broken.
