Steve Irwin’s cameraman and best friend Justin Lyons recalls his last words (Video)

The late Steve Irwin’s cameraman and best friend, Justin Lyons, is revealing what his final words were before he died seven years ago from a tragic stingray attack.

Lyons appeared on Australia’s Studio 10 and revealed that the Crocodile Hunter was very calm in his last moments.

After getting stung by an 8-foot wide sting ray, he “calmly looked up at me and said, ‘I’m dying.’ And that was the last thing he said,” said Lyons, NBC News reports.

They were at Batt Reef in Queensland, Australia, filming a documentary and they were going for one final shot.

“I had the camera and I thought, ‘This is going to be a great shot,’ and all of a sudden, (the stingray) propped on its front and started stabbing wildly with its tail, hundreds of strikes within a few seconds,” he said.

“It probably thought that Steve’s shadow was a tiger shark, which feeds on them regularly, so it attacked him. I panned with the camera as the stingray swam away. I didn’t even know it had caused any damage. It wasn’t until I panned the camera back …”

People reports Lyons performed CPR on the then-44 year old but it was too late.
He also said of his death, “We thought he was going to live forever, but it would always be a crazy silly accident, and as it turns out that’s exactly what it was.”
