Top 10 Kurt Vonnegut novels

For those who are particularly fond of words and literature, Kurt Vonnegut is more than a familiar name and probably sits among your shelf in the form of several books.

American Author Kurt Vonnegut is known for his brilliant satirical style and comical novels. His sharp tongue and quick wit keep readers intrigued and wanting to emerge themselves in Vonnegut’s cleverness.

Like Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison, Vonnegut did not do well in school, yet came out on top of one of the most respected authors. He couldn’t even keep his English grade above a C—shocking, right?

He learned of his mother’s suicide the day he left to fight in World War II—it was Mother’s Day. His time spent in battle and existing as a prisoner of war deeply effected him and shows through in his writing—several books deal with war aftermath and the internal struggle of dealing with it.

Vonnegut underwent the 1994 firebombing in Dresden only to be sent home with a Purple Heart and frostbite—a confusing tale which is nothing but true Kurt Vonnegut fashion.

The Indianapolis native’s career began in 1950 when he published his first short story by the name of Report on the Barnhouse Effect. From there his career took off with The Sirens of Titan and Cat’s Cradle.

Similar themes of the apocalypse, post war effects, science fiction and determinism pop up in Vonnegut’s writing through cynicism and comedic relief. He also explored his interest in graphic arts by inserting drawings and illustrations in his stories.

He married twice and raised seven children, three from his first marriage, the three children from his deceased sister who died from cancer, and one adopted child with his second wife.

Vonnegut lived his last day on April 11, 2007. He suffered major head trauma after falling down a flight of stairs, leaving the writing and reading community with a irreplaceable loss.

Vonnegut wrote with such style and informative ideas that make the reader feel his books were tailored for their personal enjoyment.

There true question is: Do you read Kurt Vonnegut novels, or do they read you?

Everyone is their own biggest critic—the world may find his novels to be perfect but Vonnegut thinks otherwise. Watch the video below as Vonnegut grades himself on his well-known novels:
