Death row inmate dies of heart attack after botched execution

A death row inmate in Oklahoma died of a heart attack Tuesday evening after officials botched his execution.

According to USA Today, Clayton Lockett died of a massive heart attack 43 minutes after his execution was halted because the lethal injection of three drugs was botched.

Now, the execution of a second inmate, Charles Warner, has been postponed until May 13.

KFOR reported that Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton, injected Lockett with the first drug at 6:23 p.m. The other two drugs were administered several minutes later.

Lockett, however, remained conscious and witnesses say he began to convulse on the gurney and attempted to speak and struggle.

Prison officials pulled the blinds to block the view of reporters and eyewitnesses. At 7:06 p.m., they were told that the 38-year-old died of a heart attack and that due to a vein failure, the drugs did not reach his veins.

After the botched execution, Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin said that she had the D.O.C investigate what went wrong and reviewed state execution procedures.
