Denver's 420 Rally expected to be largest yet

This year marks the first 420 rally in Denver, Colorado since the state legalized marijuana and it’s expected to be the largest rally to date.

Effective Jan. 1, recreational marijuana was legalized in the state but the protestors want the right to smoke in public, which they’re doing during the 2-day festival anyway.

“We’re going to light up no matter what If you can’t smoke at the 4/20 rally, it just doesn’t make sense,” said 25-year-old Jairin Genung, Vancouver Sun reports.

The rally is part of a weekend event, which features performances from artists like Snoop Dogg and Slightly Stoopid, as well as a marijuana-themed expo called the Cannabis Cup at a downtown trade center.

Denver City Councilman Charlie Brown isn’t thrilled about the weekend events, which are expected to attract about 80,000 people on Saturday and Sunday at the city’s Civic Center.

He told NBCNews, “The state constitution and city ordinances make smoking pot in public illegal. … If they want to celebrate 4/20, they should do so in the privacy of their home.”

Eric Brown, Gov. John Hickenlooper’s spokesman, said, “As for this weekend, [Hickenlooper] encourages people to act responsibly.”

Denver Police Department will be on hand, but that won’t stop the 420 Rally organizers and their supporters, who encourages people to “make your voice heard” on their website.
