Former NBA coach Jack Ramsay dies at 89

Former NBA coach and broadcaster Dr. Jack Ramsey died on Monday morning. He was 89.

According to ESPN, Ramsay passed away in his sleep after a long battle with cancer.

The Philadelphia native started his coaching career at Saint Joseph’s University and led the Hawks to its first Big 5 crown. He then went on to coach in the NBA with the 76ers, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Indiana Pacers.

Before coaching the Sixers, he worked as the team’s general manager and traded away Wilt Chamberlain and Chet Walker after winning an NBA championship. Ramsay also won an NBA title as the head coach of the Trail Blazers in 1977.

SB Nation noted that the Hall of Fame coach finished his career with an 864-783 (5.25) overall record.

Ramsay also worked as a broadcaster for ESPN TV and ESPN Radio. He retired less than a year ago.

The coaching legend died in Naples, Florida with his family by his side.
