Fox 2000 developing sequel for 'Mrs. Doubtfire'

Fox 2000 is ready to finally move forward on developing a sequel to the 1993 Robin Williams film Mrs. Doubtfire.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first learned the news, Williams and director Chris Columbus are both attached to the sequel to a film about a struggling divorced father who dresses up like a nanny in an attempt to be closer to his three kids.

Elf scribe David Berenbaum has been tapped to write the script for the sequel. Bonnie Hunt was originally on board to write the screenplay back in 2001, but the project was never able to get off the ground and it appeared seemingly abandoned. The major problem seemed to be that neither Williams nor Columbus were ever too thrilled in any of the many drafts written.

When Berenbaum stepped in to write the script, interest at the studio seemed to be revived.

TheWrap reports that the original film managed to earn $441 million at the worldwide box office.

The sequel will be overseen by Marisa Paiva and Elizabeth Gabler for Fox 2000.

Williams current film project is the upcoming The Angriest Man in Brooklyn and he is also currently starring in The Crazy Ones on CBS. Columbus is currently busy with Pixels, which stars Adam Sandler.
