George Clooney's parents, Nicholas and Nina Clooney, confirm and gush about his engagement to Amal Alamuddin

George Clooney’s rep won’t comment on his engagement to Amal Alamudidn, but his parents, Nicholas and Nina Clooney, will.

"It's true, and we’re thrilled. We think Amal is a wonderful girl, and it's wonderful news. We think it will be a great marriage," Nicholas Clooney, 80, told Daily News in a phone interview.

"This is their time, and they’ll have their own announcement to make, but suffice it to say, Nina and I are thrilled,” he continued of the Oscar-winning actor’s mother, Nina Clooney.

Meanwhile, Nina spoke about the engagement to MailOnline, saying she met the human rights lawyer almost a year ago.

“You can say I'm extremely happy, Amal's a lovely girl,” said the actor’s mother, 74. “I like her very much.”

Nina continued of her son’s engagement, "We weren’t at all surprised when they told us they were engaged, and we couldn’t be happier for them. On an intellectual level, they are equals. That is very important to him. Amal’s world couldn’t be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle. They share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people.”

Clooney was married to Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993 and he told Esquire last December he hasn’t had “aspirations in that way, ever. I was married in 1989. I wasn't very good at it.'
