House Speaker John Boehner mocks House Republicans for lack of action on immigration

House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio made unusual statements on Thursday while speaking in his home district. He openly mocked his Republican colleagues for lack of action in immigration reform.

Boehner was speaking before the Middletown Rotary Club at the Brown's Run County Club in Madison Township, reports Cincinatti.com. There, he told the audience, “Here's the attitude. Ohhhh. Don't make me do this. Ohhhh. This is too hard.”

“We get elected to make choices,” Boehner continued. “We get elected to solve problems and it's remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don't want to ... They'll take the path of least resistance.”

Boehner has tried to renew interest in getting immigration reform done, something Congress has failed to act on repeatedly. According to Fox News, he reportedly told an audience at a fundraiser earlier this year that he’s “hell-bent on getting this done this year.”

On Thursday, Boehner admitted that he “didn't say it was going to be easy.”

The GOP-controlled House has refused to pass a Senate bill on immigration, even though it earned bipartisan support there. CBS News notes that the bill provided a path to citizenship for any uncondemned immigrant. President Obama and other Democrats have widely criticized the House for failing to pass that bill.

Boehner’s comments come as Obama has considered ways of limiting deportations. A letter from 22 Senate Republicans criticized the plan, saying it “would represent a near complete abandonment of basic immigration enforcement and discard the rule of law and the notion that the United States has enforceable borders.”
