Hulu set to launch free mobile app this summer

At its upfront presentation in New York on Wednesday, popular streaming service Hulu announced that it plans on launching a free version of its mobile app this summer. At the moment, the only way to access Hulu content on smartphones and tablets is with a Hulu Plus subscription.

The free app will be similar to the free version of Hulu available on desktops, which means that it will still feature advertisements, the the company said. There will also be a new version of the Hulu Plus iPhone app.

“With our re-imagining of mobile viewing, we want you, our viewers, to have more access to the content you love, right at your fingertips,” Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins explained.

If you want full mobile access to all of Hulu’s content, you will still need a Hulu Plus account, which costs $7.99 a month. The company said that Hulu Plus service is now available on 400 million devices in the U.S. alone and it recently launched on Amazon’s new set-top box, Fire TV. It is also available on Playstation 4, XBox One, Roku and Chromecast.

Hulu also announced that original shows Quick Draw, East Los High and The Awesomes will be returning for their second seasons soon. Deadbeats also earned a second season.

According to CNet, Hopkins also announced an “In-Stream Purchase Unit” with Pizza Hut, one of its top sponsors. This will allow users to keep watching Hulu while they order a pizza from the chain during a commercial.
