Juno Temple, Jesse Plemons may join Johnny Depp's 'Black Mass'

The cast for Black Mass, the Whitey Bulger film with Johnny Depp starring as the Boston mobster, is still taking shape, with Jesse Plemons and Juno Temple now in talks. If Plemmons’ deal closes, that may actually keep him from doing Star Wars: Episode VII.

Black Mass will also star Joel Edgerton as John Connolly and Guy Pearce as Bulger’s brother, Billy Bulger. Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson is still in talks. Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart, Out of the Furnace) is directing.

The Hollywood Reporter noted earlier today that Temple would get to play a prostitute role, while Plemons was cast as Kevin Weeks, who becomes a tough-buy in Bulger’s inner circle.

Later, THR noted that Black Mass is filming in May, around the same time Star Wars starts shooting. So, he wouldn’t be able to do both.

Even though Plemons was linked to Star Wars as late as last month, THR notes that his decision to pick another project likely means that talks with Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t get very far.

Black Mass is based on the book by former Boston Globe writers Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. The project is being developed by Warner Bros. and Cross Creek Pictures.
