Lupita Nyong'o named ambassador of Lancome, marking her first major endorsement deal

Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o, has been named the new face of Lancome. The 12 Years a Slave star will start appearing in ads this September.

Nyong’o joins Julia Roberts, Penélope Cruz, Kate Winslet and Lily Collins as faces of the brand and she explained to Women’s Wear Daily what was “appealed” to her about it.

“What appealed to me about Lancôme is that they’re not dictating what beauty is. What they do supports something that already is — and that was appealing to me, too. It’s what drew me to them,” she said.

“Hopefully it’s a symbiotic relationship — that I benefit from being associated with them, and they benefit from being associated with me, as well,” she added.

AP notes this is the 31-year-old actress’ first major endorsement deal and she marks the first black woman to be named ambassador of the brand. Nyong’o turned heads this past awards season with her stunning gowns and outfit choices and it obviously did not go unnoticed.

“Beauty is a compassion for yourself and those around you. And I think that in focusing on that, the light inside illuminates the beauty outside,” she explained.

She also called the fact that they have actors representing the brand “significant” because they’re “not just faces, they are spirits that people enjoy and relate to more than in an aesthetic way. We have the privilege of standing for something other than just looks.”
