Michael Bloomberg plans $50 million campaign for gun control, fighting NRA

Just because billionaire Michael R. Bloomberg is no longer the mayor of New York City does not mean that he is going to stop his crusade for stricter gun control in the U.S. Bloomberg has vowed to spend $50 million on a campaign for gun control with the National Rifle Association as his main target.

Bloomberg would like to see gun control advocates be as forceful in Washington as the NRA is and wants to vote against any politician who doesn’t support their views. He told the New York Times that the NRA stops at nothing to push its agenda. So, “We’ve got to make them afraid of us,” he said.

Bloomberg, who is worth an estimated $31 billion, according to Forbes, has already spent millions of his own money to get Congress to pass tough gun control laws. However, he has been unsuccessful in beating guns rights advocates.

“Nobody’s going to take anybody’s gun away. Nobody’s going to keep you from hunting, or target practice, or protecting yourself,” Bloomberg said on NBC’s Today Show, reports Politico. “It’s just making sure that a handful of people who we all agree shouldn’t have guns, don’t get their hands on them.”

During his time as NYC mayor, Bloomberg was a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns and he also helps fund Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. His new campaign will focus on getting tougher background check laws passed at state and federal levels.
