The Michigan State University men's basketball team is mourning the loss of one of their biggest fans and inspirations.
Lacey Holsworth, whom the team called Princess Lacey, an 8-year-old cancer patient that formed a special bond with Spartans' foward Adreian Payne and the rest of the team passed away Tuesday night. She suffered from neuroblastoma which is a fetal-nerve cell cancer, according to ESPN.
Her family posted on Instagram saying that "Princess Lacey has achieved the ultimate victory. She now dances among angels... The world is a better place because you were in it. Our hearts are broken. We love you Doll. Dance all night... Mommy and Daddy, Will, Mitchell, and Luke. #LoveLikeLacey"
She was seen all throughout the Spartans' basketball season cheering on the players she formed a close bond with. She became more popular during the 2014 NCAA March Madness Tournament as the camera zoomed in on her in the stands several times during the games she attended.
Payne and Holsworth had a very close bond. Payne carried her around the court on senior night and she also helped him cut down the net in Indianapolis after the Spartans won the Big Ten tournament and also got a championship hat with the team, according to ESPN.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the family will host a memorial service for Holsworth April 17.
Holsworth was an inspiration and touched many lives, may she rest in peace.
