TV Ratings: 'Game of Thrones' sets new record, 'Last Week Tonight with John Oliver' starts strong

Sunday night was good to HBO as Game of Thrones set a new ratings record and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver debuted strong.

GoT' fourth episode managed to set a new series record high for viewers with 6.9 million tuning in, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show's last high was the fourth season premiere, which snagged 6.6 million viewers.

The premium cable network's star drama managed a total of 8.4 million viewers between its two telecasts on the night.

Meanwhile the new HBO series Last Week Tongith managed to get off to a strong start in its 11 p.m. time slot with 1.1 million viewers. Variety reports that the ratings were 51 percent higher than normal for that Sunday night slot. An additional telecast upped total viewers to 1.4 million.

Freshman comedy Silicon Valley continues to do well for HBO, as the fourth episode snagged 1.6 million viewers. The consistent ratings likely will make the network confident in its decision to renew the series. A second viewing knocked the comedy up to 1.8 million viewers.

Veep also did well on the night following John Oliver's new talk show. The show was up 20 percent over the previous week to 922,000 viewers. A second telecast of Julia Louis-Dreyfus' comedy series brought total viewers to 1.2 million.
