Valerie Harper clarifies 'cancer-free,' statement, says there was a misunderstanding with reporter

After a recent interview with Closer Weekly magazine, Valerie Harper said there was a misunderstanding between herself and the reporter when the publication quoted her as saying she’s now cancer-free.

Harper is clarifying that statement, saying it was taken out of context. The Rhoda star, 74, did say “cancer-free” but she was referring to parts of her body other than her brain.

"I had just had my yearly full-body scan to determine if this sneaky cancer had migrated to other parts of my body," she said in a statement, released by The Hallmark Channel, People reports. “I told the reporter with excitement that I was cancer free, but what I meant to say was that my full body scan revealed that I was still thankfully cancer free [elsewhere]."

Harper revealed in March 2013 that she’s battling terminal brain cancer. She has a rare condition called leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, which does not have a known cure at this time.

“While the lepto has not spread, I am still not cured. I am a cancer patient, and I continue to fight with the hope that a cure may be just around the corner,” Harper continued to say.

“I am grateful to my family, friends, loved ones, and to fans that I am in their thoughts and prayers. That support gives me great hope."

Harper beat lung cancer back in 2009 although she was never a smoker.
