‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′ spins large web with $92 million

Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 debuted this weekend and will bring in an estimated $92 million at the box office this weekend. Between Thursday night late showings and Friday's screenings the film had already made $35.5 million.

Variety reported that including international gross, the film has already made $370 million globally.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Jamie Foxx. The movie also features some well known comic book villains including The Green Goblin and Rhino.

Even though the total for a May release is impressive Spider-Man will not have what it takes to top Captain America: The Winter Solider which brought in $95 million opening weekend. The sequel to Captain America has made over $680 million including international markets, The Hollywood Reporter added.

Spider-Man 2 had a reported budget of around $250 million dollars including marketing, and Sony is not worried about making their money back. Sony's worldwide distribution topper, Rory Bruer, said that Sony is excited by the success of the film. "It’s just been stunning results across-the-board worldwide. We had only one day in China, and it’s been a huge one (estimated at $10.4 million). It’s all going to add up nicely.”

Sony is already moving forward with other films in the Spider-Man universe including Sinister Six which was set up by this sequel.
