Aaron Hernandez indicted on new murder charges

Things just keep getting worse for Aaron Hernandez. The former New England Patriots star was indicted on two new murder chargers on Thursday.

Hernandez was charged with two counts of first-degree murder along with other charges in the 2012 shooting of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. Hernandez and an associate were at the Cure Lounge nightclub in Boston when Abreu and Furtado where there. When Abreu and Furtado left, Hernandez followed them in a SUV. He pulled up next to them at a red light and shot them, according to the Associated Press. A third guy was wounded in the attack.

''Aaron Hernandez fired a .38-caliber revolver multiple times from the driver's side of his vehicle into the passenger's side of the victim's vehicle,'' killing de Abreu, 29 and Furtado, 28,” Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said.

The SUV that followed Abreu and Furtado was found in Bristol, Connecticut, which is where Hernandez grew up, according to Conley. The gun from the double-shooting was recovered from someone who has ties with Hernandez.

Hernandez’s lawyers have responded to the new charges.

“Unlike the district attorney, we are not going to try this case in the media,” they said in a statement, the Boston Globe notes. “Under our system of justice, Aaron Hernandez is innocent of these charges, and he looks forward to his day in court.”

Hernandez is currently in jail, charged with killing Odin Lloyd last year. He has pleaded not guilty to the Lloyd charge. The Globe notes that it was Lloyd’s shooting that helped Boston police connect the Abreu and Furtado shootings to Hernandez. It is unknown whether prosecutors believe there’s a link between the two cases.

Shortly after the Abreu and Furtado shootings, Hernandez signed a five-year contract extension with the Patriots that was worth $40 million. He had 51 receptions for 483 yards and five touchdowns in the 2012-13 season, according to the New York Daily News. The Patriots released him after the Lloyd shooting.

In addition to the murder charges, there are lawsuits against Hernandez from the families of the victims who are asking for $6 million. Hernandez is expected to be arraigned on the new charges next week.
