California Chrome can wear nasal strip in Belmont Stakes

Officials will allow California Chrome to wear a nasal strip during the Belmont Stakes.

According to CNN, racing officials decided on Monday that the horse would be able to use the strip and participate in the event.

California Chrome already raced in and won this year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, however, officials in New York, where the Belmont Stakes is held, pointed to a rule that threatened to shelf the horse for the June 7 race.

ESPN noted that the rule states that only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race. The Belmont Park rulebook did not specifically mention nasal strips.

In 2012, several media outlets reported that the owners of racing horse I’ll Have Another were also told that their horse could not wear the strips in the Belmont. I'll Have Another was eventually scratched before the race though due to a leg injury.

The decision for California Chrome keeps alive a bid for the Triple Crown, a feat that has not been accomplished since 1978.
