Sony has decided to release Sex Tape a week earlier than planned to face different competition. The comedy stars Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz.
In Sex Tape, which got a red-band trailer in April, Segel and Diaz play a couple with two children who decide to reignite their love life by filming a sex tape. They planned to erase it immediately, but Segel’s character accidentally uploads it to the Internet, so all their friends see it.
The film was originally set to be released on July 25, but Deadline reported today that the movie will be released a week earlier on July 18. That way, the film doesn’t have to compete with Paramount and Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules and Universal’s Lucy with Scarlett Johansson. Lionsgate’s Step Up All In also opens this weekend.
For Sony, it was really a case of pick your poison, because it still has some tough competition on July 18. Warner Bros.’ Jupiter Ascending with Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis opens that weekend, as does Universal’s horror follow-up to The Purge, Anarchy.
Sex Tape was directed by Jake Kasdan, who also directed Segel and Diaz in Bad Teacher.
