Comedy Central taps Larry Wilmore to be Stephen Colbert's successor

When Stephen Colbert steps away from Comedy Central and The Colbert Report at the end of this year, Larry Wilmore will be right there to take his place with The Minority Report.

Comedy Central announced on Friday that the Emmy winner and the "Senior Black Correspondent" on Jon Stewart's "The Best F*&#ing News Team Ever!" would be getting his own show that will air after the Daily Show starting in January 2015. The show will be similar in that it will feature a comedic spin on news and pop culture, but will also offer what the network believes to be an underrepresented and distinct view.

The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore will also feature panel guests that are unique and not always typically shown on late-night television.
"We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Jon Stewart and Busboy Productions, and are looking forward to the world getting to know Larry Wilmore even better," Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless said. "'The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore' follows in the Comedy Central tradition - bringing new perspectives to the day's events and breaking ground in the world of late night television."

Wilmore has been appearing on The Daily Show for about eight years and before that he has written for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, In Living Color and more.

As previously reported, Colbert was chosen by CBS to replace David Letterman who announced his retirement when his current contract for the Late Show ends in 2015.

Colbert said after the announcement that he would not be doing the show in character, but rather as himself noting, "we'll all get to find out how much of him was me."
