Fox's ‘American Idol’ will be scaled back next season

After some disappointing ratings, Fox announces a shake-up for the next season. Next Spring, the network will cut American Idol to one night for several weeks.

Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said the network plans some 37 hours of American Idol in the future. “Idol is not going to come back to be the ratings champion it once was," Reilly said Monday, according to the Associated Press. “But we believe the show can be on for many years to come.”

Fox has announced some new shows for the upcoming season. Some of the programs generating a buzz for Fox include Gotham. Fox says a trailer online featuring Jada Pinkett Smith has already been seen 6 million times. Another show, Utopia, will air two episodes a week in the fall. The soap opera, Red Band Society, will premiere on Fox, and Gracepoint, a 10-episode series based on the British drama, Broadchurch, will premiere.

Some programs will not make the cut this upcoming season. Fox is cancelling Enlisted, Rake, and The X-Factor, according to the Los Angeles Times.
