Gareth Edwards tapped to direct 'Star Wars' spinoff film

With Godzilla successfully topping the box office last week, director Gareth Edwards has snagged his next project, a Star Wars spinoff film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first learned of the news, Edwards is now attached to direct one of the planned Star Wars spinoff films.

Not much is known about the spinoff, other than it will be a standalone film set in the same Star Wars universe. Disney CEO Bob Iger previously said that there are plans for three standalone films, and they would be released around the new main trilogy.

The spinoff will only be Edwards third film, which only consists of the low-budget Monsters and Godzilla. He is also attached to direct a sequel to Godzilla, but any script is still in an early phase.
Edwards said in a statement, "Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life -- join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."

The Star Wars spinoff will be written by Book of Eli scribe Gary Whitta, reports StarWars.com. "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer," he said in a statement. It is "literally a dream come true."

The spinoff is planned for release on Dec. 16, 2016, which would be a year after Star Wars: Episode VII's Dec. 18, 2015 theatrical release date.
