The impending Jesus Christ Superstar North American tour is no more just days before the first performance, the production company said on Friday.
S2BN Entertainment affiliate Options Clause Entertainment revealed the cancellation in an announcement posted on the website. The post, which is short and brief, doesn’t even explain the reason for calling it a day with the musical scheduled to first open on June 9.
Entertainment Weekly, the cancellation came out of the blue since it was known that cast members were rehearsing in New Orleans. The tour was originally set to have 54 scheduled stops, starting in the Big Easy.
Laurence Connor, who currently is directing Les Miserables on Broadway, was helming the musical, with Ben Forster set to star as Jesus. Other cast members included John Lydon from the Sex Pistols; J.C. Chasez from ‘NSYNC; and Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child.
Forster snagged the starring role in Jesus Christ Superstar after beating out all other contestants in a British reality-TV program.
The tour, which was first announced in April, might have been done in due to production costs, as producer Michael Cohl told The Associated Press that the show reached into the “eight figures.” He added that for the show to work out, each stop would need to earn “several hundred thousand dollars.”
