Lawmakers discuss policies involving lethal injections and the death penalty

Lawmakers are reconsidering death penalty law after a botched execution in Oklahoma forces officials to reconsider their procedures surrounding lethal injections.

A new report by a bipartisan panel of criminal justice experts will be released on Wednesday by the Constitution Project, according to The Washington Post.

The report is called “Irreversible Error.” It does not take a position on the use of the death penalty, but instead makes recommendations. The purpose of the study is to prevent errors in executions.

Others are appalled and calling for further action surrounding the case. Oklahoma Rep. Mike Christian, a Republican lawmaker, had strong words on Tuesday, as he addressed issues surrounding the execution of Clayton Lockett. According to the Associated Press, Christian said, "I realize this may sound harsh, but as a father and former lawman, I really don't care if it's by lethal injection, by the electric chair, firing squad, hanging, the guillotine or being fed to the lions." Christian called for Republican lawmakers to have state Supreme Court justices impeached after the error in Oklahoma.
