Michelle Knight, one of the three women rescued from Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro last year, has spoken out again, saying that she forgives Castro. She also admitted to having mixed feelings about Castro’s suicide in prison.
Knight spoke with Today’s Savannah Guthrie to give an update on how she is doing, a year after their escape. She was the first of the three Castro kidnapped and spent nearly 11 years at the home.
Despite that, she feels that she can forgive Castro. “If I did something wrong, even if it was a small thing, I would want somebody to forgive me, so I can forgive him for what he done wrong because that’s the way of life,” Knight told Guthrie.
After Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus escaped and were rescued, Castro was sentenced to life in prison and faced 937 counts of rape, aggravated murder and kidnapping. A month after he began his sentence, he hung himself.
“I was saddened by it but also confused at the same time. Like why would he hurt his children like that? Why would he leave them?” Knight said of Castro’s suicide. “He was a human being, and every human being needs to be loved, even though they did something wrong.”
Knight also explained why she has done interviews alone, without Berry or DeJesus. She even signed a book deal, while Berry and DeJesus decided to work on a book without her. “We were just in each other’s life for a short while in time and maybe, just maybe, we’ll get back together,” Knight explained.
She told Guthrie that she is really enjoying life right now. “It’s just awesome,” she said.
