'Miles Davis Way' in New York named after legendary musician

Legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis was honored on May 26, what would have been his 88th birthday, with a street named after him on the Upper East Side of New York.

According to Billboard a ceremony was held to unveil the sign marking the block between 77th Street between Riverside and West End. For 25 years the cool-jazz pioneer lived in apartment building at 312 West 77th Street.

Shirley Zafirau, a neighbor of Davis, started the campaign for the renaming of the street in December, according to The New York Times. New York City Mayor at the time Michael Bloomberg signed a bill renaming the street into law at that time.

“He interacted with the community on the street,” said Zafirau, who still lives on the block. “He really liked being here.”

His legacy lived on passed his death in 1991 at the age of 65, even being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
