Minneapolis to host Super Bowl LII

The city of Minneapolis was awarded Super Bowl LII on Tuesday when the 32 NFL owners voted. The runner-up for the game, that is set to be played in Feb. 2018, was New Orleans.
Minneapolis is in the process of building a brand new stadium that will open for the 2016 season. The stadium, is worth $1 billion, will have a seating capacity of 68,400, but for the Super Bowl, the capacity will be expanded to 72,000.
“We had a great competitive bid with great corporate and civic leaders and a great new stadium coming on line,” Minnesota Vikings vice president of public affairs said in an article on usatoday.com. “It was a tremendous victory, and we’re excited about it.”
The last time Minneapolis hosted the Super Bowl was 1992; this game featured the Washington Redskins and the Buffalo Bills.
New Orleans was looking to host its 11th Super Bowl, which would move it ahead of South Florida for the most Super Bowls. The last Super Bowl to be played in New Orleans was Super Bowl XLVII, which is most famous for the 34-minute interruption early in the third quarter due to a blackout. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.
“We were right there,” said Jay Cicero, the New Orleans host committee chairman, in an article on usatoday.com. “In the end, we felt it was the new stadium that did it for Minnesota, and we congratulate them.”
Glendale, Ariz., Santa Clara, Calif. and Houston will host the next three Super Bowls, according to topendsports.com. The game in Santa Clara will be the 50th Super Bowl in history.
This past year’s Super Bowl was played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. and was the first Super Bowl played outside in a cold-weather city. The Seattle Seahawks trounced the Denver Broncos 43-8.
