Nigerian president cancels trip to town of abducted schoolgirls

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, has cancelled a planned trip to visit the town where over 300 schoolgirls were kidnapped last month by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram.

According to the Associated Press, security concerns are the reason for Jonathan’s cancelled trip. It would have been the first visit to the area by the president since the girls were taken.

Jonathan has been widely criticized in the country for his handling of the situation and not locating and rescuing the girls yet.

Last week, teams from the U.S. and UK arrived to assist the Nigerian military in the search for the kidnapped victims.

On April 14, the extremist group captured the girls from a secondary school in the village of Chibok, near the Cameroon border. About 50 were able to escape, but more than 200 are still missing.

Since then, the group has released several videos in which leader, Abubakar Shekau, announces his demands and plans for the girls.

A recent video showed many of the kidnapped schoolgirls praying in full veils, proving that they are still alive.
