Pat Riley files trademark for phrase he helped made famous

Pat Riley and his company, Riles & Co., have filed to trademark the phrase “Three-peat” on items such as towels, blankets, bed covers, and sheets. As current team president of the Miami Heat, Riley is in preparation mode for his team to win a third straight title this season.

The filing was submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office this past Monday. However it did not show up on the government organizations website until Friday May 23. According to ESPN, Riley is also thinking about licensing the phrase to retailers.

The Hall of Fame legend was a coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s when the phrase was made up. The Lakers had one NBA championships back to back in the years 1987 and 1988. He led the Lakers to four championships and eight finals appearances in the 1980s.

It is also being stated that Riley did not come up with phrase “Three-peat”, but his former player Wes Matthews who played on the Lakers during that era might have come up with it initially.

"I just thought of it as a catchy slogan. I give Pat a ton of credit for having the vision to do what he did," said Wes Matthews, reported by Bleacher Report.
