'Pillowcase Rapist' Christopher Evans Hubbart to be released into Palmdale area

A California judge ordered that a serial rapist, nicknamed the "Pillowcase Rapist," be released from a mental hospital and into a home just outside of Palmdale.

Christopher Evans Hubbart, who was convicted of raping nearly 40 women between 1971 and 1982, will be released no later than July 7, reports KTLA. He said he choose women at homes with open garage doors and visible children's toys and was jailed a total of three times after he continued to sexually assault women.

Once freed, the 63-year-old will be required to wear a GPS ankle monitor and go to twice-weekly therapy sessions. For a six-month period after his release, he will be required to have a supervisor with him if he wants to go out into public.

He will be living about 20 miles outside of Palmdale after it was decided he would be released into Los Angeles County. A suitable location for Hubbart was difficult to locate at first in the county, since he cannot, by law, live within 2,000 feet of a school or place children gather, according to The Associated Press.

Many California residents protested Hubbart's eventually release, with some even driving 350 miles to try and convince Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Gilbert Brown to keep the serial rapist locked up.

"It's very disappointing, very disappointing that this guy with this kind of record in the past would be put into any community," said James Ledford, Palmdale's mayor.

The mayor also indicated the town would try and keep Hubbart from release into their community. "We have to find some options to protect our community. We don't think the judicial system is doing it."
