Roberto Orci to direct ‘Star Trek 3′

When it was announced J.J. Abrams would be taking over the Star Wars franchise, many questioned who would be taking over the popular rebooted Star Trek franchise.

Veteran blockbuster screenwriter Roberto Orci is negotiations to take over the franchise and to direct the third film, Variety reported. Orci has worked with Abrams on both Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Orci has been campaigning strongly that he should be directing the movie because of his past with Abrams but also his background with the popular Trek films. He is currently writing the next story along with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Abrams is not totally leaving the Trek universe, he will still be on board as an executive producer, The Wrap added.

Not much is known about the upcoming project but it has been rumored that both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are expected to return to reprise their roles.

Paramount and Skydance are the main studios behind Star Trek 3.
