Roland Emmerich tapped to direct MGM, Warner Bros.' new 'Stargate' trilogy

Roland Emmerich has been tapped to direct a reboot Stargate trilogy through MGM and Warner Bros., the two studios announced on Thursday.

Emmerich's involvement isn't a surprise as he co-wrote and directed the original 1994 film with Dean Devlin. Devlin is also involved in the new project as a producer. Their original film, which starred James Spader and Kurt Russell, grossed almost $200 million at the worldwide box office.

"For us at MGM, there was no version of us further developing the Stargate franchise without Roland and Dean at the creative helm," MGM President Jonathan Glickman said. "This is their baby, and we cannot wait to bring their reenergized universe to the legions of fans around the world."

Warner Bros. Creative Development President Greg Silverman added, "Stargate created an expansive cinematic universe that engaged fans for two decades."

There was no mention of when work on the film would begin, but it likely won't be right away as both Emmerich and Devlin are currently busy on separate projects.

Emmerich is currently filming Stonewall and is in pre-production for the two Independence Day films, ID forever Part 1 and Part II, while Devlin is gearing up to begin filming his directorial debut, Geostorm.
