San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to be HUD secretary

The San Antonio mayor will reportedly be selected as the housing and urban development secretary, sources say.

Julian Castro will replace Shaun Donovan, who is sliding over to lead the Office of Management and Budget, according to The New York Times. That cabinet seat opened up as President Barack Obama nominated Sylvia Mathews Burwell to be the health and human services secretary.

Castro is a popular figure among Democrats and is even thought to be a possible vice-presidential candidate and he was selected as the 2012 Democratic National Convention keynote speaker. Obama has also reached out the 39-year-old before about interest in the transportation secretary position, but Castro wanted to remain mayor.

The San Antonio Express-News was the first to report that Obama had tapped Castro for a cabinet position, but did not know which one he had been selected for.

Before the San Antonio mayor can step into the HUD secretary role, he must go through a vetting process conducted by the FBI and a Senate confirmation hearing.

Should Castro leave for the position, the interim mayor for the Texas city will be from among those on the city council. Whoever they choose to elect will then be the mayor until the end of the term.
