San Francisco, Chicago vying for George Lucas' art museum

San Francisco and Chicago are competing to convince Star Wars creator George Lucas to build his planned museum of art and movie memorabilia in their respective cities.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee stepped forward and offered Lucas 2.3 acres of land located along the waterfront, his office spokesperson told Reuters.

"This is the most iconic site we could offer up," spokeswoman Christine Falvey said. "It's right on our waterfront and right by our Bay Bridge and AT&T park."

The museum, which will consist of Lucas' own personal collection of art from the past three centuries and digital animation, was originally going to be built on the Presidio. The area is near the Golden Gate Bridge and is protected by a land trust, who unfortunately decided to pass on allowing the museum to be built there.

With the location now up in the air, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel also decided to throw the city's hat into the ring, reports The Associated Press.

The former White House chief of staff offered Lucas a spot at the shorefront of Lake Michigan, close to other high-draw attractions like Soldier Field and Shedd Aquarium.

Emanuel is likely also hoping that while Lucas grew up in California, he was serious when he recently said in a statement that he considered Chicago his "second home."
