Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO, offers $1.8 billion for Los Angeles Clippers

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer reportedly has offered $1.8 billion to buy the Los Angeles Clippers.

Sources familiar with the situation told Forbes that the recently retired CEO is interested in the team and offered a high bid. According to another source, there have been other bids, between $1 billion and $2 billion, to come in.

Ballmer, who retired as the chief of Microsoft only four months ago, is worth an estimated $20 billion, so he could likely go higher if other interested parties try to outbid him. And two potential challengers are former NBA players Grant Hill and Yao Ming.

As previously reported, the two were separately looking to put together ownership groups in the hopes of purchasing the Los Angeles team. Yao already tried to buy the Milwaukee Bucks and owns a Chinese basketball team, the Shanghai Sharks.

The league continues to move forward in pursuit of ousting current owner Donald Sterling from the NBA, but he has said he won't go down without a fight. Though he handed over his stake in the team to wife Shelly Sterling to sell off, his lawyer said he would be "going to fight to the bloody end."
