This week’s column has mostly comedy mixed with a touch of dramatic action for good measure. Love, Rosie is about two best friends who are separated when one’s family moves away and they deal with their separation. Moms’ Night Out is about a group of mothers’ who band together for a night just for themselves away from their husbands and children and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is an science fiction action drama about a group of human survivors against a population of genetically enhanced apes and how the humans attempt to take back control. All three movies have heavy star power and two of them are sure to have moviegoers grabbing their sides from all the laughter. The third is a much anticipated sequel that is sure to keep moviegoers on the edge of their seats with wicked special effects and emotional acting. With such diverse plot lines, all three of these movies are sure to pack them in on their opening days.

Love, Rosie is a romantic comedy based on the 2004 novel Where Rainbows End by Cecelia Ahern. It stars 2012’s Mirror Mirror’s Lily Collins and 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’s Sam Claflin. The two play best friends, Rosie and Alex, respectively, but when Alex’s family moves to another country they fight to continue their strong friendship and possibly true love. The trailer shows how they meet, go through the typical adolescent humiliations and have that inevitable awkward moment when they decide if they’re friends or something more. It’s a sweet, coming-of-age tale about the issues teens go through and how two choose to deal with them. It opens in theaters on Friday, October 24.

Moms’ Night Out is a comedy starring Sean Astin, The Middle’s Patricia Heaton and country music superstar Trace Atkins. The plot chronicles one mother’s need to have a night of peace with her other married girlfriends who have kids, while the husbands attempt to take care of the children with hilarious results. The trailer illustrates how these mothers desperately need a night with each other, away from their children and husbands to unwind, but in doing so let the husbands take care of the kids with comedic and almost disastrous results. This movie seems to be filled with slapstick comedy and unexpected mishaps so moviegoers better be ready to laugh when they step into the theater. This movie opened yesterday and is probably playing at your local theater.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It stars Andy Serkis, The Americans Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer and Toby Kebbell. This time around, the human survivors of the virus unleashed a decade earlier threaten the now in power genetically-enhanced apes and while there is a fragile peace in place, a war is inevitable to determine the dominant species on the planet. The trailer is chock full of incredible makeup, special effects and passionate acting from the whole cast. Definitely a film that will keep moviegoers wondering how it will all end, it opens in theaters on Friday, July 11.
