TV Ratings: 'American Idol' bows out down from last year, 'Modern Family' strong

American Idol and Fox took Wednesday night in the ratings, but still struggled in comparison to last year, while Modern Family closed out strong.

Fox and the two-hour Idol finale averaged a 2.6 in the 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million viewers, reports Hitfix. The demo number is the best in a while for the singing competition, but was still down from last year's finale.

CBS was right behind Fox with a 2.4 rating in the demo and 8.89 million viewers. The Survivor finale was unable to top Idol, but still managed a strong 2.5 demo rating, The special reunion episode followed with a 2.0 in the demo.

Modern Family was easily the top program of the night with a 3.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but ABC only managed third place with a 1.8 in the demo and 6.24 million viewers. Family's finale was consistent with last year's. The cancelled Mixology saw no boost and averaged only a 1.3 rating. Motive returned to a soft 0.9 demo rating, while The Middle improved slightly to a 2.0 in the demo.

NBC followed behind with a 1.4 rating in the demo and 5.57 million viewers. Revolution closed out the series down slightly to a 1.1 rating, while Law & Order: SVU was even at a 1.6 in the demo. Chicago P.D. also ticked up a small bit to a 1.6 rating.
