‘Harry Potter’ author J.K. Rowling donates $1.7 million against Scottish independence

Harry Potter author and Scotland resident J.K. Rowling donated one million pounds (the equivalent of $1.7 million) against Scottish independence.

The author donated the money to the Better Together campaign, a group keen on keeping Scotland from separating from England. A vote on the independence referendum will take place Sept. 18.

“My hesitance at embracing independence has nothing to do with lack of belief in Scotland’s remarkable people or its achievements,” Rowling said, according to Bloomberg. “The simple truth is that Scotland is subject to the same 21st century pressures as the rest of the world. It must compete in the same global markets, defend itself from the same threats and navigate what still feels like a fragile economic recovery.”

Currently, 42% of respondents to a survey taken plan to vote for Scotland to stay in the U.K., 30% support independence and 28% are still undecided.

Upon predicting that some campaigners would reject Rowling’s views based on her being born and raised in England, Rowling said, “When people try to make this debate about the purity of your lineage, things start getting a little Death Eaterish for my taste,” reports The Associated Press.
