Athletics rally in 10th to top Yankees

For the first time in the history of Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees dropped three home games in three days to three different teams. After losing to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and the Seattle Mariners on Monday, the Yanks fell to the Oakland A’s 5-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday. The last time the Bombers were defeated on three consecutive days to different teams was when they played at the Polo Grounds in 1915.
In the 10th inning of Tuesday’s contest, Oakland rallied to push three runs across the plate. Designated hitter Brandon Moss started the inning off with his second home run of the game. Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes drew a walk and came around to score on shortstop Jed Lowrie’s double to deep center. After a fly-out by first baseman Alberto Callaspo, right fielder Kyle Banks drove in Lowrie with a base hit to center field.
A’s reliever Sean Doolittle shut the door on the Yankees, retiring the side in order and picking up his sixth save of the year.
Starter Scott Kazmir pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out 10. Reliever Dan Otero, who pitched a scoreless ninth got the win.
Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda, who went 6 2/3 inning, gave up one run on two hits and was in line for the win but received a no decision when Oakland tied the game in the eighth. The bullpen yielded four runs in 3 1/3 innings of work, according to ESPN.
“They’ve been really good, and they’re not going to be perfect,” manager Joe Girardi said in his postgame press conference on MLB.com. “But they’ve been a big part of the wins that we’ve had this year.”
The Yankees, who went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, will try to grab their first win of the month on Wednesday night.
