Cubs pitcher Travis Wood hits game-winning double against Marlins

Chicago Cubs pitcher Travis Wood doubled in the winning run in the top of the 13th inning to beat the Miami Marlins 5-4.

Wood came up to bat with two outs in the inning with one man on base. Left Fielder, Junior Lake, singled in the prior at bat. Wood would hit the third pitch of the at bat down the left field line, allowing Lake to score from first, according to Cubs.

Cubs manager, Rich Renteria, went through seven pitchers and 10 field players in the first 12 innings of the game.

By the 13th inning, the Cubs were down to two players still eligible to play Wood and catcher Eli Whiteside and Renteria had to make a tough decision, CBS Sports reports.

“[Whiteside] was my last guy, then if we get beyond and I use Russ [pitcher James Russell], I need somebody to pitch and I still need another body,” Renteria said. “The way [Wood] handles the bat, he gave us, he gave himself a chance in that at-bat.”

Wood has two career game winning RBIs, according to Cubs

Wood told the Cubs website he practices hitting and tries to be the best that he can.

“I’ve always hit growing up and out of high school. I didn’t have three or four years of college, but I stuck with it,” he said. “Like I’ve said before, it’s part of our job as a starting pitcher in the National League, so I practice that and try to be as best as I can.”

Wood pitched the day before and got the win.

The Cubs moved to 29-39, while the Marlins are now 35-34.
