Felipe VI becomes the King of Spain

This Thursday, in a modest ceremony, Spain welcomed a new king, Felipe VI.

Felipe follows his father, Juan Carlos, in line for the throne. Juan Carlos was Spain’s monarch for four decades and abdicated the throne. Felipe is 46 years old, and will consider issues like the economy and quality of life for the people of Spain.

"We are a great nation. Let us believe and trust in ourselves," Felipe said at his swearing-in ceremony, according to the Associated Press.

Felipe believes that finding jobs for the unemployed is at the top of his list of things to do for the people of Spain. Another goal is to keep the country unified while still celebrating the cultural heritage of Spain. According to Reuters, Felipe ended his speech with the words “thank you” in Castilian Spanish, Basque, Catalan, and Galician.

In a ceremony fit for a royal, the 18th-century Spanish crown and 17th-century scepter were displayed. Later 2,000 people gathered at a banquet at the royal palace. Felipe wore a military uniform in recognition of the important day.
