Gunman kills three police officers in Canada shooting

A massive manhunt is underway in New Brunswick after a gunman fatally shot three police officers, and injured two others Wednesday evening. The officers were responding to a report of an armed man in the north end of Moncton, when the gunman opened fire.

The gunman is 24-year-old Justin Bourque. USA Today reports that he was wearing camouflage and was carrying two rifles late Wednesday when he began firing at officers in Moncton.

Wintess Joan MacAlpine-Stiles told CBC News that she saw the shooter when she went to open a window of her home. She said, “…we opened up the windows in the family room and there he was going across through the back with this rifle on his shoulder.”

Police are encouraging residents of Moncton to stay in their homes until the suspect is found. Mounted Police Constable Damien Theriault told a href=http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-shooting-3-rcmp-officers-dead-2-wounded-1.2665359> CBC News, “And now we need to pull together and locate this individual as quickly as possible to ensure everyone’s safety. We are professionals and we have a job to do right now. We will have time to grieve after.”

Police are actively searching for Justin Bourque, and encourage local residents to be cautious.
