Honda, Mazda, and Nissan recall vehicles due to airbag defects

Three car companies have made recalls due to the potential defective airbags.

The Associated Press reported that airbags manufactured by Takata Corp. led to Honda, Mazda, and Nissan calling for recalls of their vehicles. The airbags have the potential to explode, even though there have been no accidents reported based on the recall, which was announced Monday.

Honda recalled about 2.03 million vehicles, and they actually had another recall last year for similar issues pertaining to airbags. A recall this month by Toyota came after an airbag defect had been reported after a fire. Luckily, no one was injured.

According to the New York Times, the defective airbags have a potential to explode and cause injuries to passengers due to flying shrapnel. Air bag technology is reportedly a very expensive commodity and there are only three companies that are major suppliers, with one of them being Takata.

A statement from Takata said there were issues in the handling of chemicals and explosive propellants that are used for air bag inflation, as well as keeping records when it came to quality control.

The company was reported to say, “We take this situation very seriously, will strengthen our quality control, and make a concerted effort to prevent a recurrence.”

Many of the cars that were recalled included cars made in 2000 to 2005 by Honda, cars from 2001 to 2003 by Nissan, and Mazda cars made from 2002 to 2004.
