Jadeveon Clowney signs rookie contract with Houston Texans

The number one pick in this year’s NFL draft has now been signed. Jadeveon Clowney signed a contract with the Houston Texans on Friday.

Clowney signed a four-year, $22.272 million, fully guaranteed, contract with the Texans. The contract includes a fifth-year option and a $14.518 million signing bonus, according to the Houston Chronicle, which first reported the news. He’s the ninth of ten Texans draft picks to sign. He’s the 18th first-round pick to sign this year.

''For any rookie it's very difficult to make the jump from college to pro. It doesn't really matter if they were drafted No. 1 or undrafted, they're all trying to learn and keep pace with the veterans,'' Texans coach Bill O’Brien said at a recent team workout. ''I think he's doing a decent job of and he's working hard at it.''

Clowney was a defensive end at South Carolina. However he will be an outside linebacker with the Texans. In three seasons at South Carolina he had 139 tackles and 24 sacks, according to the Associated Press. He also had nine forced fumbles, which is a school record.

Clowney is the Texans third overall top pick in team history. Quarterback David Carr in 2002 and defensive end Mario Williams in 2006 are the Texans other top picks. UCLA guard Xavier Su’a-Filo is the only Texans pick that is still unsigned.
