Kristen Wiig to make directing debut, written with 'Bridesmaids' co-writer

Kristen Wiig has no interest in making a sequel to Universal’s monster hit Bridesmaids, but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t going to work with her writing partner, Annie Mumolo again. The Saturday Night Live alum has signed on to make her directorial debut with a script she wrote with Mumolo.

The duo will write, produce and star in the film, which will be made at TriStar Productions. According to The New York Times, the studio has described the film as centering on two friends who get in over their heads in the town of Vista Del Mar. Wiig will direct, but there is no release date set.

“We’re very excited to be writing,” the duo said in a statement to the Times. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”

Wiig also called this the “perfect first project.”

Bridesmaids was an enormous success, grossing $288 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo stats. The film cost just $32.5 million to make and even earned Wiig and Mumolo an Oscar nomination for their script. Despite the success, Wiig has made it clear that there will be no direct sequel.

“We wanted it to be the right time and the right idea,” Mumolo and Wiig told the Times about their new script. “And both of those elements have come together.”
