Luis Suarez banned from rest of World Cup for biting Italy player

Soccer’s notorious biter, Luis Suarez of Uruguay, has been banned from the rest of the 2014 FIFA World Cup after having the urge to taste human flesh for the third time in his career. On Tuesday, Suarez bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during his teams 1-0 win over Italy.

FIFA said that Suarez violated the code that bans unsportsmanlike conduct from football matches. As a result, he is banned from any football-related activities for the next four months, including nine matches. Suarez was also fined 100,000 Swiss francs.

The suspension is effective immediately, which means Uruguay will have to play Colombia without him on Saturday in Brazil.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, said in a statement.

Suarez’s actions were seen by the world during the match with Italy. Just a minute after the incident, Diego Godin did score the game-winning goal that helped Uruguay get out of the group stage of the tournament. However, Suarez’s Mike Tyson impression was the topic of the day and spawned countless online memes.

As The Guardian notes, this is the third time Suarez has bit another player. When he did it a second time in April 2013, he received a 10-game suspension.
