NFL 2014: The Jets - Patriots rivalry continues

It all started with “The Tuna,” as he left the New England Patriots after their Super Bowl loss to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in 1997. Where he wound up actually started the current New York Jets / New England Patriots rivalry for the past 17 years.

Parcells admittedly was unhappy with Robert Kraft and ownership as he was not given the ability to shop for his own players. He then hooked up with Leon Hess and the New York Jets and turned around one of the more inept franchises in the league at the time.

The New England Patriots were furious by this, called the league office and as a result the Jets had to give up compensation to the Pats which included a first rounder in 1999, according to articles.latimes. Fast forward to Parcells leaving New York after the 99’ season, and we have another coaching controversy involving Bill Belichick.

Belichick, a then assistant for Parcells in New York, was given the head coaching job upon Parcells departure. That lasted for an entirety of one day, as Belichick left for greener pastures in New England. This time the Jets complained the league office, and they were the ones awarded compensation.

A Jets Mo Lewis’ hit on Drew Bledsoe paved the way for Tom Brady and three championships later the rest is history.

While the championship count is three to zip in favor of New England, these two franchises have given us many moments throughout the years.

Whether it’s been Brady’s dominance over the Herm Edwards/Eric Mangini Jets; or Rex Ryan shocking the pats in the 2010 playoffs; or the instant-classic butt fumble; the moments keep on rolling in.

This will surely include 2014 as former Jets franchise player cornerback Darelle Revis is now a member of the New England Patriots. In March he signed a one year deal worth $12 million, according to CBSsports.com. This means one of the best defensive players in the league will now be helping Tom Brady win games each Sunday.

Rex Ryan will now have to deal with that, and we are all confident he’s not happy about this. He was not happy when he was traded to Tampa, and this will just add another chapter to the Jets / Pats rivalry.

In 2014 it will be Darrelle Revis, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Pats against Michael Vick, Chris Johnson, Rex Ryan and the Jets. Game On, as we add another chapter to this saga.
