President Obama puts together Pollinator Health Task Force to protect honey bees

In an effort to protect bees, whose population has been dwindling very recently, the White House has set up a task force.

The Telegraph reported President Obama made the announcement about putting together a Pollinator Health Task Force. Pesticides have been blamed for the 23% decline of bees last winter.

Bees pollinate the food we eat and the White House reportedly said the process made by the honey bees adds value to agricultural crops, specifically about $15 billion.

President Obama put an order in to the team of representatives from as many as 15 departments in order to study the decline and how to improve the bees’ habitat, as well as how to educate people on protecting bees.

The memorandum reportedly states, “The problem is serious and requires immediate attention to ensure the sustainability of our food production systems, avoid additional economic impact on the agricultural sector, and protect the health of the environment.”

Reuters reported that many environmental groups are concerned that while the steps being taken are going on the correct path, more needs to be done about the pesticides that are suspected of causing the decline.

The president of Friends of the Earth, Erich Pica, has reportedly said, “The administration should prevent the release and use of these toxic pesticides until determined safe.”
